Kythira is the only island in Greece lying opposite the south-eastern tip of the Peloponnese peninsula. It is traditionally listed as one of the seven main Ionian Islands, although it is isolated in the middle of the Ionian sea between Crete and the mainland. Kythira is famous in mythology as the idyllic birthplace of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. It is the cross-path of the Dorian, Spartan / Athenian, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian Mediterranean civilizations. Because of this interesting and diverse history, Kythira provides endless historical and mythological explorations.

Many enchanted beaches are ready to be discovered on the island of Kythira, including the two bays of Kapsali, above which our retreat center is located. A twenty minute hike from Kapsali, and dominated by a Venetian castle built in 1150, Hora, the capital of Kythira, is a great place to shop for jewelry, sandals, clothing and local sweets and wines.

Spend a day hiking the waterfalls of Mylopotamos, or take a boat excursion to the island of Chytra to swim and explore the blue grottos hidden there. For a more introspective experience, climb to the cave of St. John and meditate, gaze at the view or search for the unique ‘sempreviva flowers’, a treasure of the island representing eternity.

For a taste of the island, and a sweet touch to the experience of Kythira, we can organize honey tasting for your group, highlighting the unique and famous honey coming from the island’s special Thyme flowers.
